Logic Pro: Introducing Sampler
And yes, the EXS24 overhaul is long overdue — that aspect also will deserve more detailed attention from people making soundware content. The latest Logic instruments and effects and workflows all start to look very consistent and integrated. Apple has put them together in a way that looks clear and uniquely theirs. I have to see exactly how Live Loops fits in with this, but that is obviously relevant, too.
We also start to see iOS integration that makes sense. Logic Remote lets you work with the loop grid, even browsing and adding loops, and working with remix effects. Apple has been slowly overhauling Logic ever since it first acquired the software from Emagic over a decade and a half ago — with a lot of that team still involved, and pretty consistent management on the Apple side, as well. And zones and mapping look easy to find, as well. Quick Sampler goes there, too.
Both let you grab sound recording or drag-and-drop , loop, slice, and map zones. Well and having compared Quick Sampler to Simpler, the UI here has more in common with recent plug-ins than any host — down to a growing taste for animated visual feedback and clear semi-modular definition of structure.
Flattened UIs. This is the really good stuff, and it feels like the Logic team is even getting gradually more comfortable with the design language. Cough , Windows high-DPI. You can reverse playback, lock sample triggers to just the back or white keys, and even adjust the Flex timing:. Quick sampler will automatically pitch and tune your sample when using the Optimized method, but you can engage Flex mode to have it played back at its original speed for all note pitches as well.
One particular option usually tied to the Slice sampling mode to pay attention to is the Create Drum machine Designer Track function. This feature will automatically create a new Drum Machine Designer track and instrument in your session using the content you currently have loaded up in Quick Sampler. This effectively makes it possible to implement your Quick Sampler instruments into single elements of a larger DMD kit. You can directly replace Quick Sampler with a Sampler on an instrument channel strip instrument slot with all of the current QS content automatically transferred over.
That should be a good starting point for anyone looking to just get going without being inundated with the deeper level parameters. We will be looking at some more advanced techniques and the synthesis-based features in the future as we get a chance to put QS to work in various recording projects.

If there are multiple zones with the same root note, Sampler creates velocity layers—a different sample is triggered depending on how hard you strike the key—based on the perceived loudness of the samples. Sampler finds loop points, balances the volume levels of the zones based on their loudness, and automatically crops the zones.
Choose the Optimized drop zone that works best for the samples you're using:. When you drag a Chromatic option, Sampler chromatically maps samples as zones across the keyboard range, starting from C2. Each zone is mapped to a single key on the keyboard.
The original file length, tuning, and volume are used. Looping data is read from the file header, if present. Choose the Chromatic drop zone that works best for the sample you're using:. After you've created your sampler instrument, you have full access to edit functions in Sampler. Click Mapping in the Sampler toolbar to see and adjust how samples are mapped to keys. You can double-click Mapping to maximize the Mapping pane. In the Mapping pane, use the keyboard view to graphically edit zones and groups.
You can edit each sample slice directly within the Drum Machine Designer. Click a pad in the drum grid to see the sample in the waveform display, below the drum grid. Change the playback mode, adjust the start and end point of the sample, adjust the fade in and fade out, and more. Additionally, you can access of all of the Quick Sampler controls, which in the Drum Machine Designer are separated into two page views:.
Drag from the lower portion of the waveform display in Sampler to the Sampler track lane in the Tracks area or to a cell of the Sampler track in the Live Loops grid. The pasted region contains MIDI notes of each slice placed sequentially in ascending order, so when you play the project back, it plays the sample back as it sounded in Quick Sampler.
Click the Instrument slot in the new channel strip, then choose Quick Sampler from the pop-up menu. Drag a file from the Logic Pro files browser, Loops browser, a region from any track or from the Finder into one of these areas of the Quick Sampler waveform display : If you want Quick Sampler to automatically set the tuning, loudness, length, and loop points of the sample, choose Optimized.
If you want to keep the original tuning, loudness, and length of the sample, choose Original. The sample is mapped to keys above and below the defined root key, which by default is C3. EXS put all controls related to each subtractive synthesis module—pitch, filter, amp—within the relevant module section, but Sampler goes a different way.
In Sampler, only the most commonly-used programming controls are included in the main display of the Synth panel—this makes for more streamlined access to the most frequent tweaks, but might leave EXS users wondering where the rest of the relevant parameters can be adjusted.
Those additional parameters are now found in a secondary drop-down display in the Synth panel, accessed from the Details button on the upper right. While this may not be as immediately obvious as in EXS, it does help keep the overall display from being too cluttered. Finally, one of the most important new Sampler features is the automatic Import capability. This slick feature is not really a Sampler feature per se—Logic Dragging a group of samples into the Sampler window can invoke several intelligent options for automatically arranging them into a playable keymap.
Sampler also includes options for auto-looping, which works surprisingly well, and can be a terrific time-saver when looping sustained samples. Some Logic experts may recall that EXS also included some of these features, but the difference is that now they work far more reliably, and provide more consistently usable results.
